Data Science Intern
Our Summer Internship Program puts you in the heart of one of the most strategic companies in the world. You will partner with multiple team members, collaborate with different departments, focus on specific projects, which you will support and even lead. Your expertise will help solve problems that may not even exist today. Our guidance and education throughout this journey will help build your confidence, expand your professional experiences and help improve your leadership skills. Our Program runs for approximately 13 weeks from the end of May to mid-August. Internships are paid and available for those seeking remote, hybrid, and onsite opportunities. WEX hires the brightest, most talented individuals into our program. Many of our interns end up securing full-time positions or receive extended internship opportunities within the company after completing their initial program. In this Role: The team designs, deploys, and maintains machine learning and artificial intelligence models, and we are a key function to enable WEX’s strategic objectives. The team uses advanced methodologies, a wide range of data types, and modern technologies to identify and manage credit risk, protect our clients from fraud, and help assist the business through predictive insights. As such, you will not only be working with cutting-edge techniques for machine learning and artificial intelligence, you will also support important real-world applications to drive predictive insights for decision-making, and work with a best in class AMAZING team!! What you will be doing:
- Learn side-by-side from experienced data scientists to mentor and guide you through hands-on projects.
- Understand applications of data science and machine learning in the domains of fintech and financial services.
- Build code to extract data, test and train machine learning models, and assess model performance.
- Learn emerging trends in machine learning and identify opportunities for their applications.
- Synthesize findings into actionable insights and tailor conclusions to stakeholders of various backgrounds.
- Understand how machine learning projects are managed to drive a clear path to production and impact.
Must have for this role:
- Currently enrolled in a Master’s program or a rising senior in a Bachelor’s program in a quantitative field such as Data Science, Computer Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Finance, or other domain.
- Excellent problem-solving and critical thinking skills
- Strong foundational knowledge of Python for data science and analytics through hands-on projects in coursework or self-study.
- Understanding of common machine learning approaches in regression and classification, as well as common performance diagnostics.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Adaptable and comfortable working collaboratively in a group or independently.

Actual pay rates will vary and will be based on various factors, such as your qualifications, skills, competencies, and proficiency for the role. Base pay is one component of WEX's total compensation package. Most sales positions are eligible for commission under the terms of an applicable plan. Non-sales roles are typically eligible for a quarterly or annual bonus based on their role and applicable plan.
