Payroll Manager-Japanese bilingual ( Full remote, East coast time )

About the Role
We are seeking an experienced Payroll & Expatriate Tax Manager to join our growing team. In this role, you will oversee payroll operations and provide individual and expatriate tax consulting services to a diverse client base, including multinational corporations and globally mobile employees. The ideal candidate is a licensed CPA or EA with strong expertise in U.S. individual taxation, expatriate tax compliance, payroll administration, and client advisory services. This position offers the opportunity to work directly with clients, develop tax-efficient solutions, and mentor junior tax professionals.
Key Responsibilities
Tax Compliance & Advisory
- Prepare and review U.S. individual income tax returns (Form 1040 and related filings)
- Prepare and review tax equalization and tax protection calculations
- Perform expatriate tax gross-up calculations
- Research tax issues and provide practical solutions to clients
- Assist clients in responding to IRS and state tax notices
- Act as a client representative before tax authorities when necessary
- Stay current on federal, state, and international tax regulations impacting globally mobile employees
Payroll Management
- Oversee end-to-end payroll operations for assigned clients
- Review payroll data for accuracy, completeness, and compliance
- Process payroll adjustments and reporting requirements
- Ensure payroll tax compliance and timely filings
- Identify opportunities to improve payroll processes and controls
Client Service & Leadership
- Serve as a trusted advisor to clients on payroll and expatriate tax matters
- Develop tax-efficient strategies aligned with clients’ business objectives
- Build and maintain strong client relationships
- Mentor, train, and support Tax Staff and Senior Accountants
- Lead internal and external training sessions on payroll and tax-related topics
Qualifications
Required
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Taxation, Finance, or related field
- Active CPA or Enrolled Agent (EA) designation
- 5+ years of experience in:
- Individual income tax preparation and review
- Expatriate tax services
- Payroll administration and compliance
- Strong knowledge of U.S. federal and state individual taxation
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and tax software applications
- Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills
- Strong written and verbal communication skills in English
- Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment
- Detail-oriented with exceptional accuracy and follow-through
Preferred
- Experience with Japanese expatriate tax programs and global mobility services
- Business-level Japanese language proficiency
- Experience working with multinational clients
