Role Overview – Lead Data Engineer

In this senior technical role you will architect, build, and maintain cutting‑edge data solutions that support a variety of business units, including product configuration, advertising effectiveness, customer acquisition, and new‑market expansion. You will lead a talented team of data engineers, collaborate with data product owners, data modelers, and data architects, and ensure that our data pipelines deliver high‑quality, reliable information at scale.

Key Responsibilities

  • Data Platform Architecture: Design and evolve end‑to‑end data warehousing solutions that span on‑premise, cloud, and hybrid environments, ensuring they meet performance, security, and compliance requirements.
  • ETL/ELT Development: Build, optimize, and maintain robust ETL pipelines using technologies such as Hadoop, Spark, AWS Glue, Snowflake, and Flink to ingest, transform, and load massive data sets.
  • Technology Stack Management: Champion the use of Hadoop, AWS (S3, EMR, EC2), Snowflake, Flink, and related ecosystems while continuously evaluating emerging tools and frameworks.
  • Collaboration & Leadership: Partner with Data Product Managers, Data Modelers, and Data Architects to translate business requirements into scalable data models and solutions.
  • Documentation & Governance: Maintain comprehensive documentation of data pipelines, schemas, and data lineage to support data quality, governance, and auditability.
  • Performance & SLA Management: Monitor system performance, troubleshoot bottlenecks, and ensure that service‑level agreements (SLAs) are consistently met for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Agile Participation: Actively contribute to Scrum ceremonies, sprint planning, and retrospectives, promoting continuous improvement and rapid delivery cycles.
  • Mentorship & Team Development: Coach junior engineers, foster a culture of knowledge sharing, and lead technical design reviews.

Essential Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems, or a related field (or equivalent practical experience).
  • 5+ years of hands‑on experience designing and implementing large‑scale data solutions in a production environment.
  • Deep expertise in SQL and the ability to craft performant queries across relational and analytical databases.
  • Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, Java, or Scala, with a track record of building reliable data pipelines.
  • Extensive experience with Hadoop ecosystem components (HDFS, Hive, Spark, PySpark) and cloud data platforms (AWS, Snowflake, Redshift, BigQuery).
  • Demonstrated experience with data integration tools and streaming technologies (e.g., Flink, Kafka, Kinesis).
  • Strong understanding of data modeling principles, dimensional modeling, and data warehousing best practices.
  • Hands‑on experience with data orchestration tools (Airflow, Luigi, AWS Step Functions) and CI/CD pipelines for data engineering.
  • Familiarity with Agile and Scrum methodologies, including the ability to work effectively in a fast‑paced, cross‑functional team.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree or advanced certifications in data engineering, cloud architecture, or big‑data technologies.
  • Experience leading a data engineering team or managing large‑scale data projects from inception to production.
  • Knowledge of data governance frameworks (e.g., Collibra, Apache Atlas) and data security best practices.
  • Exposure to machine‑learning pipelines and collaboration with data science teams.
  • Hands‑on experience with containerization (Docker, Kubernetes) for deploying data workloads.
  • Publications, open‑source contributions, or speaking engagements in the data engineering community.

Core Skills & Competencies

  • Analytical Mindset: Ability to dissect complex business problems and translate them into elegant data solutions.
  • Problem‑Solving: Proactive approach to identifying root causes, optimizing performance, and delivering resilient pipelines.
  • Communication: Clear articulation of technical concepts to both technical and non‑technical audiences.
  • Collaboration: Strong teamwork skills, with a focus on building partnerships across product, analytics, and engineering teams.
  • Leadership: Demonstrated capacity to inspire, mentor, and guide engineers toward shared goals.
