Role Overview – Data Engineer (Remote)

arenaflex’s Data Engineering team partners with Data Science, Product, and Innovation groups to design, build, and maintain robust data pipelines that power analytics, machine learning models, and business intelligence across the organization. As a Remote Data Engineer, you will be responsible for end‑to‑end data flow management, from requirements gathering to pipeline orchestration, ensuring data quality, reliability, and performance at scale.

Key Responsibilities

  • Data Requirements Gathering: Collaborate with business stakeholders, data scientists, and product owners to translate business needs into technical specifications and data models.
  • ETL/ELT Pipeline Development: Design, develop, and maintain scalable ETL/ELT processes using SQL (Snowflake/PostgreSQL) and Python, ensuring efficient data extraction, transformation, and loading.
  • Data Quality & Validation: Implement automated data validation, testing, and monitoring frameworks to guarantee data integrity and compliance with governance standards.
  • Pipeline Orchestration: Build and manage workflow schedulers (e.g., Airflow, Prefect) to automate data pipelines, handle dependencies, and provide reliable job execution.
  • Data Modeling & Architecture: Create and evolve logical and physical data models, design schema, tables, and views that support analytical and reporting needs.
  • Performance Optimization: Conduct query tuning, indexing, and resource optimization to improve pipeline throughput and reduce latency.
  • Collaboration & Documentation: Work closely with DevOps, QA, and security teams to embed best practices, maintain version control (GitLab/GitHub), and document architecture, processes, and standards.
  • Continuous Improvement: Stay current with emerging data technologies, propose enhancements, and contribute to the evolution of arenaflex’s data platform strategy.

Essential Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Mathematics, Statistics, or a related discipline.
  • Minimum 2 years of hands‑on experience building and supporting ELT/ETL pipelines in a production environment.
  • Proven expertise in Python programming and advanced SQL (preferably with Snowflake or PostgreSQL).
  • Experience developing in multi‑environment setups (Development, QA, Production) and applying DevOps practices for code deployment and versioning.
  • Solid understanding of relational database design, data modeling concepts, and data warehousing principles.
  • Familiarity with containerization technologies such as Docker and orchestration tools for reproducible environments.
  • Strong analytical mindset with the ability to troubleshoot complex data issues and propose effective solutions.

Preferred Qualifications & Differentiators

  • Hands‑on experience with cloud‑based data platforms (e.g., Snowflake, Databricks, BigQuery) and cloud services (AWS, Azure, GCP).
  • Experience managing large‑scale datasets and distributed processing frameworks.
  • Knowledge of infrastructure‑as‑code tools (Terraform, CloudFormation) and CI/CD pipelines for data engineering workflows.
  • Exposure to machine learning pipelines and collaboration with data science teams to deliver production‑ready models.
  • Certifications in cloud platforms (AWS Certified Data Analytics, Google Cloud Professional Data Engineer) or related technologies.

Core Skills & Competencies

  • Technical Proficiency: SQL, Python, Snowflake/PostgreSQL, Docker, GitLab/GitHub, Airflow or similar scheduler.
  • Problem‑Solving: Ability to dissect complex data problems, identify root causes, and implement robust fixes.
  • Communication: Clear articulation of technical concepts to non‑technical stakeholders and effective documentation skills.
  • Collaboration: Team‑oriented mindset, comfortable working in cross‑functional remote teams across time zones.
  • Adaptability: Quick learner who thrives in a fast‑paced, ever‑changing environment and embraces new tools and methodologies.
