Why This Role Matters

In today’s fast‑moving digital health landscape, the reliability, security, and scalability of our platforms are non‑negotiable. As a Principal DevOps Engineer, you will be the architect of arenaflex’s next‑generation DevOps ecosystem, driving cultural change, automation, and operational excellence across the organization. Your work will directly influence the health outcomes of millions, ensuring that our services are always available, performant, and compliant with the highest industry standards.

Role Overview

This is a fully remote, full‑time position based in the United States (Illinois preferred) with a competitive hourly rate of $20‑$30. You will report to the Senior Director of Platform Engineering and collaborate with cross‑functional teams spanning security, compliance, product, and data science. The role is ideal for a seasoned professional who thrives in complex cloud environments, loves mentoring junior engineers, and is eager to shape the future of healthcare technology.

Key Responsibilities

  • Strategic Leadership: Define and execute a comprehensive DevOps strategy that aligns with arenaflex’s business goals, emphasizing reliability, scalability, security, and cost efficiency.
  • Infrastructure as Code (IaC): Design, implement, and maintain IaC pipelines using Terraform, Ansible, or comparable tools to provision and manage resources across multi‑cloud environments (GCP, Azure, AWS).
  • CI/CD Automation: Build, optimize, and own continuous integration and continuous delivery pipelines with Jenkins, CircleCI, GitHub Actions, or similar platforms, ensuring rapid, repeatable, and safe deployments.
  • Observability & Monitoring: Integrate monitoring, logging, and alerting solutions (Prometheus, Grafana, Splunk, Cloud Logging) to provide end‑to‑end visibility into application performance and infrastructure health.
  • Security & Compliance: Partner with security and compliance teams to embed best practices—vulnerability scanning, secret management, and secure release processes—into every stage of the DevOps lifecycle.
  • Performance Optimization: Analyze pipeline metrics, identify bottlenecks, and implement improvements that increase deployment frequency while reducing failure rates.
  • Mentorship & Knowledge Sharing: Coach junior engineers, lead technical workshops, and foster a culture of continuous learning and collaboration across the organization.
  • Technology Evangelism: Stay ahead of emerging trends (service mesh, GitOps, serverless, AI‑driven operations) and champion their adoption where they add measurable value.
  • Cross‑Team Collaboration: Work closely with product owners, data engineers, and QA teams to translate business requirements into reliable, automated infrastructure solutions.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related discipline (or equivalent practical experience).
  • 5+ years of hands‑on experience in cloud environments (GCP, Azure, or AWS) with a strong focus on containerization (Docker, Kubernetes).
  • Proven expertise in Infrastructure as Code using Terraform, Ansible, or similar tools.
  • Deep knowledge of CI/CD tooling (Jenkins, CircleCI, GitHub Actions) and version‑control systems (Git).
  • Strong scripting/programming skills in Python, Bash, or Go.
  • Demonstrated ability to solve complex, ambiguous problems with data‑driven solutions.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with a track record of influencing cross‑functional teams.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with observability stacks (Prometheus, Grafana, Splunk, Cloud Logging) to drive proactive incident management.
  • Background in security‑focused DevOps practices, including vulnerability scanning, compliance automation, and secure deployment pipelines.
  • Hands‑on experience mentoring junior engineers and leading technical training initiatives.
  • Familiarity with serverless architectures, service mesh technologies (Istio, Linkerd), or GitOps workflows.
  • Prior work in regulated healthcare environments, understanding of HIPAA, HITRUST, or similar compliance frameworks.

Core Skills & Competencies

  • Technical Acumen: Mastery of cloud networking, storage, and compute services; ability to design resilient architectures.
  • Automation Mindset: Passion for eliminating manual processes through code, scripts, and reusable templates.
  • Analytical Thinking: Strong problem‑solving abilities, capable of diagnosing performance issues and recommending actionable improvements.
  • Leadership Presence: Ability to inspire confidence, drive consensus, and lead by example in a remote setting.
  • Customer‑Centric Focus: Understanding of how infrastructure decisions impact end‑users, clinicians, and business stakeholders.
  • Continuous Learning: Commitment to staying current with industry trends, certifications, and best practices.
