Role Overview – Senior Staff Software Engineer (HPC & ML)

We are seeking an experienced, highly motivated Senior Staff Software Engineer to lead the design, development, and optimization of high‑performance computing (HPC) and machine‑learning (ML) solutions on the arenaflex Cloud platform. This role blends deep systems expertise with a passion for building scalable, reliable, and performant software that powers cutting‑edge research and enterprise workloads.

As a senior technical leader, you will own end‑to‑end project delivery, mentor a team of talented engineers, and influence architectural direction across multiple product lines. You will work closely with product managers, research scientists, and customers to translate ambitious performance goals into concrete engineering outcomes.

Key Responsibilities

  • Full‑Stack Development: Design, implement, test, and maintain HPC and ML software stacks on arenaflex Cloud, including kernel‑level drivers, user‑space communication libraries (e.g., MPI, libfabric, NCCL), and high‑throughput application interfaces.
  • Performance Engineering: Conduct detailed profiling, benchmarking, and optimization of compute, networking, and storage subsystems to achieve sub‑microsecond latency and petabyte‑scale throughput.
  • System Architecture: Define and evolve architectural blueprints for next‑generation HPC/ML services, ensuring extensibility, security, and compliance with industry standards.
  • Leadership & Mentorship: Guide a small group of senior engineers, set technical roadmaps, conduct design reviews, and foster a culture of code quality, testing, and continuous improvement.
  • Collaboration: Partner with product managers, data scientists, and external research partners to gather requirements, prioritize features, and deliver solutions that meet real‑world workloads.
  • Reliability & Operations: Develop robust monitoring, alerting, and automated remediation mechanisms to guarantee high availability and fault tolerance for production services.
  • Innovation: Stay abreast of emerging technologies in HPC, ML, networking, and cloud infrastructure; prototype novel approaches and contribute to arenaflex’s internal research community.

Essential Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • Experience: Minimum 3 years of professional software development experience with a focus on systems programming, performance optimization, or large‑scale distributed computing.
  • Programming Expertise: Proficient in C++ (modern standards), with solid understanding of memory management, concurrency, and low‑level system interfaces.
  • Linux Kernel & Device Drivers: Hands‑on experience developing or maintaining Linux kernel modules, device drivers, and RDMA (Remote Direct Memory Access) technologies.
  • HPC & ML Frameworks: Demonstrated experience with MPI, libfabric, NCCL, or comparable high‑performance communication libraries.
  • Problem‑Solving Skills: Ability to analyze complex performance bottlenecks, devise creative solutions, and implement them efficiently.
  • Communication: Strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to convey technical concepts to both technical and non‑technical audiences.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced Degree: Master’s or Ph.D. in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related discipline, especially with research focus on HPC, distributed systems, or machine learning.
  • Cloud Experience: Prior work on arenaflex Cloud (or comparable public cloud) services, including infrastructure‑as‑code, container orchestration, and serverless compute.
  • Performance Tools: Familiarity with profiling tools such as perf, VTune, gprof, or custom tracing frameworks.
  • Security & Compliance: Understanding of secure coding practices, vulnerability mitigation, and compliance frameworks (e.g., GDPR, HIPAA) for cloud services.
  • Leadership Track Record: Experience leading cross‑functional teams, driving technical strategy, and delivering large‑scale projects on schedule.
  • Publications & Patents: Contributions to peer‑reviewed conferences, journals, or patents in the domains of HPC, ML, or systems engineering.

Core Skills & Competencies

  • Deep knowledge of operating system internals, networking stacks, and storage subsystems.
  • Expertise in parallel programming models and synchronization primitives.
  • Ability to write clean, maintainable, and well‑documented code that adheres to industry standards.
  • Strong analytical mindset with data‑driven decision making.
  • Proactive attitude toward learning new technologies and sharing knowledge.
  • Collaboration tools proficiency (Git, Gerrit, Jira, Confluence).
  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines and automated testing frameworks.

Career Growth & Learning Opportunities

arenaflex invests heavily in the professional development of its engineers. In this role, you will have access to:

  • Technical Leadership Programs: Structured mentorship, leadership workshops, and opportunities to lead high‑visibility initiatives.
  • Research Collaboration: Direct interaction with arenaflex’s research labs, enabling you to contribute to cutting‑edge papers and patents.
  • Continuous Education: Tuition reimbursement, online course subscriptions, and internal tech talks covering emerging topics such as quantum computing, AI ethics, and next‑gen networking.
  • Global Mobility: Options to work from arenaflex’s Sunnyvale headquarters, remote locations, or other global offices while maintaining a flexible work‑life balance.
  • Career Path Flexibility: Ability to transition into senior engineering management, principal architect, or specialized research roles as your interests evolve.
