Corporate Counsel MaineHealth | Portland, Maine Hybrid or Onsite (roledependent) MaineHealth is seeking experienced Corporate Counsel to join its dynamic inhouse Legal Services team. This role provides legal advice and support across a broad range of corporate, commercial, regulatory, and healthcare matters, working closely with operational leaders, executives, and clinicians. The ideal candidate is a practical, collaborative attorney who enjoys working in a complex healthcare environment and serving as a trusted business partner.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide legal counsel on a wide range of healthcare and corporate matters, including provider operations, regulatory compliance, and risk mitigation
  • Draft, review, and negotiate commercial contracts and agreements (e.g., services, vendor, IT, clinical, and business associate agreements)
  • Advise business leaders on healthcare laws and regulations (including HIPAA, fraud and abuse laws, reimbursement, and licensing requirements)
  • Support system initiatives, affiliations, and strategic projects
  • Partner with compliance, risk, privacy, and operational teams to identify and manage legal risk
  • Collaborate with and manage outside counsel as needed
  • Contribute to policy development, education, and continuous improvement efforts within the legal function

Qualifications

Required

  • Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school
  • Active license to practice law in Maine or ability to obtain Maine licensure
  • Minimum 5 years of relevant legal experience, including healthcare, corporate, or commercial law experience gained inhouse and/or at a law firm
  • Strong contract drafting and negotiation skills
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate complex legal guidance clearly to nonlegal audiences

Preferred

  • Prior experience advising healthcare organizations, hospitals, or health systems
  • Knowledge of healthcare regulatory frameworks (HIPAA, Stark, AntiKickback, reimbursement, privacy)
  • Experience working in a large, matrixed organization
  • Interest in longterm inhouse career growth
