Backend and Data Engineer

Remote · USA Full-time New today

Description

  • Condor Software Inc. is at the forefront of revolutionizing the financial infrastructure for drug discovery and development. We are building a sophisticated financial intelligence layer that bridges the gap between clinical operations and finance, empowering R&D and finance leaders with real-time insights and control over their operations. Our platform connects clinical operations, vendor activity, and financial signals into a unified, intelligent system, designed to scale industry standards and power prediction, control, and execution in complex R&D environments. Having moved beyond concept validation, Condor is now trusted by enterprise teams for critical operations and finance, and we are entering a phase of rapid scaling. As a high-growth Series A company backed by prominent investors like Insight Partners, Felicis, and 645 Ventures, we are seeking talented individuals to join us in building foundational infrastructure that will significantly impact how new therapies reach patients.
  • We are looking for a Senior Backend and Data Platform Engineer to play a pivotal role in constructing the core data infrastructure that underpins Condor's financial intelligence platform. This position is central to transforming complex clinical and financial data into actionable intelligence that enterprise biopharma teams rely on for their operations. You will be instrumental in designing and owning the data foundations that drive Condor's financial engine and its advanced AI-driven capabilities.
  • Your responsibilities will encompass modeling highly intricate and high-stakes financial data, developing robust and reliable data pipelines and backend services, and ensuring the accuracy, consistency, and scalability of downstream product features and intelligence workflows. The systems you build will directly support mission-critical finance and operational use cases, moving beyond simple dashboards or experimental features to provide tangible, impactful solutions.
  • This is a hands-on, senior engineering role offering significant ownership and impact. You will operate across backend services, data pipelines, and APIs, guiding features from initial design through to production deployment. A key part of your role will involve defining schemas, transformation logic, and architectural patterns that will form the scalable backbone of our platform.
  • While the primary focus is on backend and data engineering, you are expected to engage pragmatically across the entire technology stack. This cross-functional involvement is crucial to ensure that data and intelligence are accurately and effectively surfaced within our product, providing a seamless user experience.
  • This role is ideal for engineers who are passionate about building durable, scalable infrastructure within complex, real-world scenarios. If you thrive in environments where correctness, trust, and scale are paramount, and where the systems you design have the potential to shape an entire industry, then this opportunity is for you.
  • Key Responsibilities include:
  • Designing, building, and maintaining scalable data pipelines responsible for ingesting, normalizing, and transforming diverse financial and clinical trial data from multiple internal and external sources. A key objective is to prepare this data for advanced analytics, comprehensive reporting, and the development of LLM-based AI agents.
  • Developing robust backend services and data access layers that efficiently expose high-quality financial data to both internal systems and customer-facing features. This involves structuring data for direct consumption by Large Language Models (LLMs) and automated workflows, ensuring seamless integration.
  • Implementing and operating embedding pipelines and vectorized representations of structured and semi-structured data. This is critical for supporting advanced functionalities such as semantic search, Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG), and sophisticated agentic workflows.
  • Optimizing database performance, query execution, and batch processing jobs to effectively handle large-scale financial datasets and support demanding AI-driven access patterns, ensuring speed and efficiency.
  • Actively participating in critical architectural decisions concerning data infrastructure, storage strategies, and the integration of LLMs, embedding technologies, and vector databases, shaping the future of our data platform.
  • Collaborating closely with product managers and analysts to translate complex business requirements into durable, well-defined datasets, key metrics, and accessible APIs, ensuring alignment between technical solutions and business needs.
  • Contributing to frontend implementations where necessary, particularly to ensure that data-heavy and AI-enabled features are presented clearly, accurately, and effectively to end-users, providing a cohesive product experience.
  • Mentoring other engineers on best practices in data modeling, SQL performance optimization, effective ETL design patterns, and the principles of building reliable, observable data systems, fostering a culture of technical excellence.

Requirements

  • 8+ years of professional software engineering experience, with a significant emphasis on backend development and data engineering.
  • Deep expertise in SQL and relational database design (e.g., PostgreSQL, MySQL), including proficiency in complex analytical queries and performance tuning.
  • Production experience building and operating ETL or ELT pipelines using orchestration frameworks (e.g., Airflow, Dagster, Prefect, AWS Step Functions).
  • Proven experience building AI-powered data systems, including vector databases (e.g., pgvector, Pinecone), embedding pipelines, and designing data access patterns for RAG and agentic workflows.
  • A pragmatic, full-stack approach, including a willingness to contribute to React codebases to ensure end-to-end delivery of data-heavy features.
  • Familiarity with data quality validation, testing, and monitoring practices in production environments.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.

️ Benefits

  • Competitive compensation and meaningful equity participation.
  • Comprehensive employee benefits package, including 100% company-paid health, dental, vision, and life insurance.
  • 401(k) plan with an immediate 3% company match.
  • Unlimited Paid Time Off (PTO).
